TX Music Mag.

Viva Big Bend

We recently played the first Viva Big Bend festival (part music festival and part music-industry conference) produced by Texas Music Magazine.
Mingo Fishtrap was featured in the very first issue of TX music magazine when we first made Austin our official home. Go ahead check out our write-up by Allie Eissler (below) in the Viva Big Bend issue of Texas Music Magazine:

TEXAS MUSIC MAGAZINE - SUMMER 2012 (Viva Big Bend)

Motown is still alive in Austin, as evidenced by the

punchy horns, clean beats and powerhouse live show of eight-piece Mingo Fishtrap - an ensemble that comfortable occupies the space where melodic pop meets gritty Memphis soul, with a satisfying twist of old-fashioned N'awlins funk.

Roger Blevins Jr.'s emotive, smooth-as-butter vocals simultaneously pay homage to Stevie Wonder and Sly and the Family Stone - and in a true nod to Sly, Blevins' own father now serves as Mingo's bassist, with decades of rhythm-and-blues touring under his belt.

Mingo began as a relaxed after-school jam session with friends while Blevins and another five of the group's members studied jazz at the University of North Texas - which explains much of their impressive technical virtuosity. A well-received performance at a dorm talent show encouraged the soulful students to focus on music more seriously. They relocated to Austin, phased out Otis Redding covers in favor of original material, took to the stage with biggies like Blues Traveler and Galactic. The band is no on the cusp of releasing its fourth full-length album. If their past records are any indication, audiences best get ready to shake it.
